Name of the Institute:

University of Nyíregyháza, Institute of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, Department of Agricultural Sciences and Environmental Management

Research objectives:
Research activities of this research group are scoped on the study of the landscape management through preserving, developing and adapting biological bases of locally cultivated agricultural crops.

Description and results of research:
Our activities are the followings:

  1. Breeding, maintenance of horseradish, “pritamin” paprika and white cabbage lines and varieties is running, their agrotechnical maintenance is investigated. The horseradish research is based on a nearly 100 various horseradish lines and varieties. Our institute have ownership of 2 state recognized horseradish cultivars Nyírnemes and Petrence, 1 state recognized “pritamin” paprika cultivar Nyírpiros, and 3 state recognized white cabbage cultivars Hadházi lapos, Pallagi lapos and Szatmár fejeskáposzta. Yield, pest control, leaf anatomy investigations are conducted.

  2. Pest resistance, the aesthetic appearance of grape bunches, special taste and seedless of berries is investigated in various table grape varieties. Our institute have ownership of 6 state recognized table grape cultivars; Adria, Bíró kékje, Dunav, Guzal kara, Szuvenir and Péter.

  3. At our Tuzson János Botanical Garden a plant preservation program is running. Main areas of research: exploring the flora of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, participation in Hungarian flora mapping, development of propagation technology of protected plants, examination of ecological conditions of ex situ plant cultivation (e.g. Clematis integrifolia; Telekia speciosa (Schreb.) Baumg., and Lychnis coronaria L. Desr. ex Lam). We have collected 22 various protected plant species from which we now have a large stock for propagation.

  4. The cultivation of Leguminous crops is dominant in the Training Farm of the University of Nyíregyháza. The lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is the most perspective Leguminous plant in the acidic sandy soil. The hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) is the other perspective plant of sand farming. We experimented production technologies and plant protection for these species.
