Five kitchens were renovated and expanded in Building 1 of the University of Nyíregyháza Campus Dormitory. The renovated rooms and common areas were officially handed over on September 3, 2025. The investment cost nearly 100 million forints, which was financed by the university from its own resources.

New kitchens and dining rooms awaited the residents of Campus Dormitory Building 1 from September onwards. The comprehensive investment transformed the small rooms, which were previously equipped with two hotplates, into rooms with two rows of furniture, three ovens, four hotplates, and two built-in microwave ovens on all five floors.  A spacious dining room and washroom were also built next to the kitchens. The renovated infrastructure allows more students to use the equipment at the same time, and more powerful extractor fans have also been installed.  The development also included the installation of new safety equipment and fire alarms. The total investment amounted to nearly HUF 100 million, which was financed by the University of Nyíregyháza from its own resources.

At the official handover ceremony, Dr. János Hárskuti, President of the University of Nyíregyháza, said that the dining areas created next to the kitchens will not only make cooking more comfortable, but the uniformly renovated rooms on each floor will also serve to build community.  "A kitchen where we can gather together occupies a central place in the lives of most families. We cannot replace a real home, but we can create a homely environment and a sense of belonging to a community. We want students to feel this, which is why this infrastructure development was so important to us." In addition to securing the necessary funding, the university and dormitory management also paid special attention to ensuring that the construction was completed on time, before the move-in date in September.

Marcell Vincze, president of the Student Council, also expressed his gratitude for the renovation on behalf of the students. He added that such comprehensive investments contribute significantly to increasing the comfort of those living in the dormitory.

At the handover ceremony, Ernesto Romeu Pereira, an Angolan mechanical engineering student, summed up his thoughts in Hungarian: "I moved into this dormitory last year, and at that time we had a small kitchen on each floor, which was often occupied. What's more, there was no separate communal area on the floors where we could gather. Now, in addition to cooking, there will be a place for communal meals and conversations, which I am very happy about."

Mukeke Abel Muzala has been studying in Hungary since September 2021, but he has just arrived at the University of Nyíregyháza and will start a Hungarian-language mechanical engineering program in September, which means he will be living in the dormitory for seven semesters. "The kitchen is very important to me, I cook a lot and I love it, so I'm glad that cooking can also be a community program here in the dormitory," he added to the comments of those who spoke before him.
