Research area and keywords of research:
Physical geography
(Keywords: geomorphology, fluvial surface development, floodlpali deposition, geoinformatics)

Name of the researcher(s) and research group:
Dr. Róbert Vass

Name of the Institute:
University of Nyíregyháza, Institute of Tourism and Geography

Research objectives:

  • Determination of river surface development processes using sedimentology and geoinformatics methods
  • Examination of the floodplain deposition along the Upper Tisza
  • Evaluation of long-term water level data and their correlation with wave field recharge
  • Examination of the changes in bed morphometric elements and their correlation with the floodplain deposition
  • Examination of fossil beds using geoinformatics and sedimentological methods

Description and results of research:

  • By determining the maturity and change of the roughness of the floodplain, it was shown that the roughness of the wave bed along the Upper Tisza has increased significantly in the last six decades, which greatly contributes to the replenishment of the area.
  • During the examination of the filling of the dead beds in the floodplain, we found that the level of filling along the upper sections is smaller and the grain composition of the sediment is finer than in the case of the dead beds of the lower sections.
  • Sedimentological investigations of the paleo-soil levels identified in the Beregi plain area in 2015 revealed that they are identical to the meadow clay levels described by Zoltán Borsy. Using the radiometric and OSL dating methods, it was established that the formation of paleo-soils started at the beginning of the Atlantic age and lasted until the end of the Oak phase. Several thin paleo-soil levels have developed in the parts of the former arterial flats close to river ridges.
