Research objectives:
The aim of this project is to examine the REE-s removal potential of several submerged and free-floating aquatic plants.

Description and results of research:
The development of new technologies in the last quarter century has led to the steadily increasing use of rare earth elements (REE) and their consequent release into the surface waters. However, no single publication addresses the issue of whether REE-s can be accumulated by aquatic organisms. The question remains completely open whether aquatic macrophytes are able to remove anthropogenic REE-s. Here we examine the elemental accumulation and biofilltration potential of several submerged and free-floating aquatic plants in laboratory conditions.
